I was pleased with how I stuck to my goal of doing more initial research as I really think this really helped me with producing illustrative imagery centred around the same theme. I used Pinterest to do this and found it a really useful source for inspiration as it has such a wide array of creative material which all use different mediums. It was quite difficult putting the different images I collected together to make final pictures that really worked and helped create the atmosphere I was going for. I also don’t think that all the final four images completely go together as one cohesive outcome. Perhaps next time I will think more about the components I am putting together and maybe think of a better way to order the imagery to add some kind of narrative to the pieces. Having said this I feel like overall the colours within the imagery and the textures that were created as a result of merging the different elements that I gathered on Photoshop worked well to produce the overall atmosphere I was going for. When listening to the “Foley” sound piece I imagined a woodland environment but half way through this tranquillity is interrupted by a foreign almost alien invasion and I feel like the bright psychedelic colours present in all of the four images helps to communicate that.

D+P "The untold"- Character workshop Week 2
As I said in my first post of this project, one of my ideas for my final prints was to have a narrative going through them with a woodland creature featuring in all of them as a sort of main character. For this workshop I therefore chose to make a hedge hog out of some found materials which was harder than I thought.
I wasn't really happy with the outcome, probably because it seemed too realistic and once I sketched out a few images for the story board for this idea, I decided it was't the right direction to go in.
I feel like a more decorative approach to illustrating the different scenes I envisioned whilst listening to the piece would be more appropriate for surface/textile design. I will therefore be able collage and layer different illustrations, photographs etc. to make more abstract woodland scenes. As there is no visual representation with the sound piece, I get many vague and fragmented versions of what is going on and I think that this more collaged approach to image making will suit the uncertainty of the narrative with in the piece.

D+P "The Untold" Research
For this project I wanted to focus of getting to grips with looking at other images/artists work for inspiration as I felt that this research element to my image making was really lacking in my other projects. I therefore went on Pinterest and looked up various things to do with "Woodland" as that is where I imagined the "Foley" sound piece to originate from.
I was particularly interested in the large variety of textures that you can find in this environment such as bark and the delicate structure of leaves. Whilst looking I came across the artist Bryan Nash Gill whose prints reveal the true complexity of nature through the growth pattern of tree trunks. He cuts massive cross sections of tree trunks and meticulously inks the surface and transfers the ink onto hand made paper.
To me these looked a lot like contour lines on a map, however I thought similar images that I could perhaps draw might be useful to incorporate within my designs.

D+P "The Untold"- Mis-en-scene Week 1
For this project I have chosen to visually respond to the given sound piece Foley. When listening to it I liked the relation to nature and the sounds that you might hear in some sort of woodland. I liked how even though the material was an audio piece there still seemed to be some narrative and story going on within it. I particularly liked how this narrative is open to interpretation and how everyone's opinion of it will be different as they would have gone though different experiences through out life that might influence this. Therefore no two peoples version of the story would be different so I decided to go with what ever comes to my mind when listening to it.
Throughout the piece there seem to be lots of different animal noises such as those from birds and maybe a frog. And given one of our tasks will be to create a character, I decided to base my made up story, in response to the sound piece, from the point of view of one of these animals.
My initial thoughts were maybe to set this "story" in a rainforest of some sort so then my character could be some sort of tropical frog which might have been interesting to explore in multiple visual ways. However I decided that the sounds within the piece didn't really depict a rainforest environment but rather of just a normal woodland, maybe within a local park.
In the audio track there seems to be several transitions, it starts off slow and then builds to some sort of climax and then dies down again at the end. I thought this could maybe be an indication of a daily process, with the beginning starting off slow as all the animals are waking up, and then in the middle of the day there is some sort of dramatic event, and then night comes, which might lead to other perhaps nocturnal animals coming out and then morning comes again at the end of the piece as it sort of finishes off how it started.
I therefore thought the story could be from the point of view of a bird of some kind, that maybe follows it's journey throughout the day, documenting what it might see and the things it might come across. The climax could be the occurrence of a threat of some kind, maybe a cat chases it and then the story could document what happens around it as night falls and the bird goes to sleep.
For this project I wanted to produce a proper final outcome that relates more to what I am interested in doing in the future such as surface pattern or textile design. I therefore thought that I could produce a series of 4 images that could be translated on to fabrics or other materials and then used to make products such as cushions, clothes, diaries etc. In these images I plan to explore my made up story produced in response to the "Foley" sound piece, and hopefully when all the images are played out at the end of the project, however they might be displayed, they will illustrate this narrative.

D+P Book cover- finished piece
Review
I am pleased with how most of the elements seem to fit together. I feel like this is mainly down to using the same group of colours (red, blue and white, representing the Union Jack) throughout and how I mainly stuck to using watercolours. I also think that the advice to design the composition as a whole instead of doing the imagery and then putting the text around it really helped me. In my opinion the second attempt at producing the finished cover was much more successful because of this and I feel like the imagery as a whole works much better as a result. Having said this, I am not totally happy with how it turned out mainly because I found it difficult to apply the right font to the typography on the blurb, quote and author’s name. I think if I were to have hand written this in a more creative way, like I did with the title, the composition would have looked a lot better. Even though it was a long process to get to the point where I was relatively happy with the outcome, I think it was worth it as it taught me what it takes to produce a finished outcome for a professional brief.
