Figure Drawing project 2 Relationships- Final piece

Thumbnails- working out composition and medium for longer 3 hour pose. For these quick sketches I found it difficult to stick within the frame.

I chose to base the final piece on the top right thumbnail as I thought this was the most interesting composition.

For the final piece I wanted to focus on the theme of separation primarily through the use of composition. When drawing out the image I increased the distance between the two figures and placed the two mugs on the table in the centre to perhaps mirror where the “couple” once were. The “togetherness” of the coffee cups could resemble the previous state of the figures’ relationship with the physical separation between them depicting the condition of it now. The moody hues of blue could also help to illustrate the conflict between them.

As I drew from the figures I saw around me, I felt that I became slightly quicker at recording information as I knew it didn’t have to be a perfect finished drawing as this is almost imposible with the subjects constantly moving around. In some instances such as the drawing at the bottom of this image, I began to look at the surrounding context to increase the theme of “separation or togetherness” and I quite enjoyed adding this detail to the images.

For the drawings including two people, I enjoyed composing the image so that the position of the figures showed differing viewpoints of the body.

Figure drawing- Friend or Foe studio session

For this exercise we were encouraged to move around in order to find the best composition that would depict the given theme. I found this a useful exercise as it enabled me to think about the image as a whole and not just focusing on drawing the figure in its entirety. 

Single line drawings- practicing being freer with mark making.

This was a good exercise which helped me to become less “precious” with my drawings however the outcomes didn’t have great resemblance to the actual subjects.

15 minute drawing. Following on from the previous exercise. With this drawing I was focusing on getting the composition of the image to reflect the theme of “foe”. I like how the line between the two figure more or less extends across the page and how their body language seems to reflect a sense of insecurity as they refuse to look at one another.

“Friend”- Long pose. This pose was a bit more difficult than the pevious one with the addition of the chair and sheet. Despite the obvious proporional mistakes, I like that I was able to add my own style to this longer piece. The face is something I find challenging and something which I need to takle instead of just leaving it out when drawing from the figures.

D+P Exhibition

Within the exhibition I also included two prints I did in the first semester, my Adrian Mole book cover and a few sketchbook pages from The Untold project.

Overall I was happy with the final destination of my work and felt that the positioning of the pieces worked well to compliment the surrounding imagery.

D+P Preparing for the exhibition

Getting my images printed on fabric wasn’t as complicated as I thought. As I was getting them printed on the cheapest cotton fabric I wasn’t sure whether the colours would come out as vibrant as seen on the screen. To my surprise, I loved the quality of colour and especially after I had steamed and washed them, the prints turned out just as I had hoped.

It was quite difficult when figuring out where to but the four prints in the exhibition as the initial plan was to group all of the pieces dedicated to the same text or sound piece in the same area. Since all of us who had responded to the “Foley” sound piece had produced work that was very colourful, the whole exhibition space didn’t seem balanced, resulting in a lot of moving around. I also found it particularly hard to align my four fabric prints as the material meant that square formations weren’t always reliable.

I was pleased with how I stuck to my goal of doing more initial research as I really think this really helped me with producing illustrative imagery centred around the same theme. I used Pinterest to do this and found it a really useful source for inspiration as it has such a wide array of creative material which all use different mediums. It was quite difficult putting the different images I collected together to make final pictures that really worked and helped create the atmosphere I was going for. I also don’t think that all the final four images completely go together as one cohesive outcome. Perhaps next time I will think more about the components I am putting together and maybe think of a better way to order the imagery to add some kind of narrative to the pieces. Having said this I feel like overall the colours within the imagery and the textures that were created as a result of merging the different elements that I gathered on Photoshop worked well to produce the overall atmosphere I was going for. When listening to the “Foley” sound piece I imagined a woodland environment but half way through this tranquillity is interrupted by a foreign almost alien invasion and I feel like the bright psychedelic colours present in all of the four images helps to communicate that.
